Narrative:
Set in Jackson, Mississippi during the 1960s. Skeeter decides to interview the black women who have spent their lives taking care of prominent white southern families.
Aibileen and her best friend Minny are the first to open up about cooking, cleaning and child-rearing. Skeeter becomes increasing uncomfortable with the attitude of her white socialite friends towards their 'help', after their plans to legislate separate toilets for black domestic help because they 'carry disease'.
Skeeter writes about the relationship between whites and their black help, especially since the children raised by black maids tend to take on the prejudiced attitudes of their parents when they're adults. The maids are reluctant to take part in the project, afraid of getting fired. Their worries are heightened after the assassination of President Kennedy.

Key Scenes:
- When Minny tells Hilly that she is eating a pie filled with her own excrement,
-Skeeter walks into Aibileens home and sees all of the maids who have decided to help her
-Flashbacks to Skeeters childhood
-'Bridge Club' scenes (emphasise how Skeeter no longer fits in)
-Flashback to when Charlotte fired Constatine
